Detroit's decline began well before the 1967 riots, in the 1950's the auto manufacturers and their suppliers started to move production out of the city to locations with less expensive labor and land. In 1950 the population of Detroit peaked at 1,849,000 people, by 2021 it had plummeted to 632,000. Over 120 public schools were abandoned and were left with books still on the shelves. The auto industry left huge factories deserted. Detroit became a destination for urban explorers looking for the forgotten gems.
